The person on the right is the outgoing assistant driver who seems to be holding up a placard – the loco has switched on the headlamps and flasher, perhaps in response to the placard. The switching on of the lamps by the incoming crew saves time needed by the outgoing crew to check the facilities of the loco. Note the rake of curving behind the loco – the majority of the train is on track 1, while the loco and the leading coaches are on the track 2 – the north end of the platform 1 of NGP is bent !.
