  4. Lohardaga, ZDM-4A 224

At Lohardaga. ZDM-4A 224 on return working to Ranchi, looking east awaiting departure back to Ranchi. This line is 69km long and took about 4 hours each way, as not only was it restricted to 25km/h but had lengthy stops where locals loaded large bails of goods into box wagons that must have been added to the train specifically to cater for this freight! This was the sole working from Ranchi to Lohardaga and back daily except Tuesdays! This line was due for closure for gauge conversion just days after my visit, but I did not know until I was there! In fact the NG carried on for a few months more and a few years later the line is BG with TWO trains each way daily, much faster and more useful for the locals but much less interesting to the visiting enthusiast. 21.12.2003.
