The Great Side Middle Berth Debate

Photos of brand new 07xxx AC 3 Tier and Sleeper coaches with Side Middle Berths fitted. Ram Kinhikar had been travelling from Indore to Nagpur and tipped me off about the new coaches. The rake was of the Nagpur - Indore Trishatabdi Express at Nagpur.

smb_3ac_instructions

Instructions on how to lower the Side Middle Berth to its proper place have helpfully been provided near every SMB.

This is how the Side Middle Berth looks in its locked down (up?) position. The berth has to be unhooked and turned over to open. Read the instructions in the previous picture.

One of the two hooks that secure the SMB to the Side Upper Berth. I'd hate to be underneath if they give way. The berth will definitely put one to sleep, perhaps permanently, if it falls on some poor soul's head.

No more sitting and staring out the window at night on the Side Berths now.

Another photo, just to give you an idea of how high the middle berth is. Photo by Shriniwas Harkare.

The not so hot seat. Four are to be seated on this side in the main bay. Three on the other.

The irritant of the side middle berth aside, the coach has excellent warm toned interiors. I hated the earlier clinical blue and white look. Many other passengers were quite pleased too.

Signs direct people to their proper berth numbers. Many were confused when they entered the new coaches. Some people were alloted LB but the coach showed those numbers as UB, others were alloted MB by the PRS but they ended up SLB according to the new numbering scheme.

As you can see, good use is already being made of the SMB on the Nagpur Indore Express.

Quality workmanship always shines through. Here you can see the flash reflected off the steel frame beneath the broken veneer. And this is actually a 07xxx coach.

I liked the reading lamps in this coach. But perhaps they could be placed better unless you need better illumination for the insides of your skull.

Compared to the 3AC coach, the SL coach featured far more dull and boring interiors. Here's the SMB in its normal raised position. The SUB has been raised by around half a feet, I think.

Wonderful job Alok! At first I thought photos from some prison cell were put up in the gallery until I realised that it is insight into the future troubles of 3AC travel! Nevertheless, the warm interiors are a welcome change from the standard blue....

"Something is always better than nothing ". Nothing wrong if SMB are reserved for RAC only. But it would be awfull if a person who books two months in advance and ends up with a lousy SMB.
